For many, the quintessential image of a diamond is that of a shimmering white gem. Thus, the existence of ‘fancy colored diamonds’ may be a delightful revelation. While the majority of mined diamonds bear tints of yellow or brown, it’s the rarer, pristine white diamonds that predominantly grace jewelry showcases. However, beyond the conventional spectrum of white, yellow, and brown, there exists an array of exotic hues: from the ethereal pinks and elegant champagnes to the fiery reds and rich chocolates.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) employs a grading system, the D to Z scale, to categorize diamonds within the traditional color gamut. This spans from the pristine ‘D’ grade, representing absolute colorlessness, to the ‘Z’ grade, which indicates a light yellow or brownish hue.

In the diamond realm, rarity is synonymous with value. For standard colored diamonds, their value is inversely proportional to their color; the more colorless they are, the rarer and hence more valuable they become. Conversely, for fancy colored diamonds, their value escalates with the depth, purity, and uniqueness of their color.

GIA’s grading system for colored diamonds delineates their hues in ascending order of intensity: from Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, to the more pronounced Fancy Dark, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, and Fancy Deep. The apex of value is often reserved for the Fancy Vivid and Fancy Deep classifications, commanding premium prices in the market.
